Surfing in Sri Lanka: The 2027 Guide to Spots, Seasons and Prices

Sri Lanka is one of the few places where you can surf warm water all year by switching coasts. This guide covers which coast works when, every key break by level, what lessons and camps really cost, and how to fit the surf around the rest of the island.

Arugam Bay on the east coast, the island's best-known surf town, in season from about May to October.

Quick answer

Where and when can you surf in Sri Lanka?

Surf the south and west coasts from November to April (Weligama, Ahangama, Hiriketiya, Hikkaduwa) and the east coast from May to October (Arugam Bay and its points). Beginners learn best in Weligama Bay; experienced surfers head for Arugam Bay Main Point and Pottuvil Point. Water stays around 27–30°C, so no wetsuit is needed.

  • Two seasons on opposite coasts, so there is surf all year
  • Weligama Bay is the island's classic learner wave
  • Group lessons from about US$20, board hire about US$10 a day
  • Colombo to Arugam Bay is a 6.5–7.5 hour drive

The two surf seasons: why Sri Lanka works all year

Two monsoons reach Sri Lanka from opposite directions, and each one turns a different coast on or off. That is the single most important thing to understand before booking a surf trip here.

Some guides start the east-coast season in April. April and October/November are shoulder months on both coasts.

When the south-west monsoon arrives in May, the south and west coasts get onshore wind and messy seas, while the same groundswell wraps around to the east coast and lines up the Arugam Bay points. From November the pattern flips. Water stays warm either way: Surf-Forecast logged 29.3°C at Arugam Bay in June 2026 and over 30°C in early May.

Your level

In this month the south and west coasts are in season, while the east coast is usually flat.

3 spots on the south coast and west coast:

  • Weligama Bay

Weligama · Gentle beach break over sand

The island's classic learner bay. Dozens of surf schools line the beach, and boards are cheap to hire.

  • Hiriketiya

Near Dikwella · Horseshoe bay: beach break plus a reef left

A small, sheltered bay that works on all tides and is consistent. It gets crowded in peak season.

  • Hikkaduwa Main Reef

Hikkaduwa · Reef break with peaks for most levels

The original Sri Lankan surf town. Busy, with plenty of board hire and easy access from Colombo.

Where to stay

Choosing a surf base

Where you sleep matters more than in most surf destinations, because the good waves on each coast sit in tight clusters. Choose by season first, then by level and how much nightlife you want.

Arugam Bay suits you if

  • You travel between May and October
  • You want long right-hand points
  • You will combine surf with Yala or Kumana safaris and the hill country

Choose the south coast instead if

  • You travel between November and April
  • You are a complete beginner who wants a sandy bay
  • You want a short airport transfer (Weligama is about 3 hours by expressway)

Competitions

Surf competitions in 2026 and 2027

The Surfing Federation of Sri Lanka held its Surfing Championship 2026 at Arugam Bay Main Point on 10 to 12 September 2026, with national and open categories. The federation has said it plans a 10th edition of the Sri Lanka Surfing Championship in 2027; dates had not been announced when we checked in November 2026.

A national championship was also held at Hikkaduwa in January 2026, and its results fed into selection for the 2026 Asian Games. There has been no World Surf League event in Sri Lanka since the So Sri Lanka Pro, a qualifying-series contest at Arugam Bay in September 2019. If you see claims of a new WSL event, check the WSL's own schedule.

Stay safe

Safety and local etiquette

Most surf injuries in Sri Lanka come from the reef, the sun and other boards rather than anything unusual. This is general advice from our trips, not a substitute for local knowledge on the day.

  • Reefs: many breaks, including Main Point, Ram's and Benny's, break over shallow reef. Wear reef booties and clean cuts promptly in the tropical heat.
  • Sun: the equatorial sun is strong. Surf early and late, and wear a rash vest and reef-safe sunscreen.
  • Currents: beach breaks can have rips. If you are new, surf only where a school or lifeguard is present.
  • Crowds: Main Point and Hiriketiya get busy in peak season. Respect priority and do not drop in.
  • Insurance: check that your travel insurance covers surfing; some policies exclude it.

On wider safety, the UK government does not advise against travel to any part of Sri Lanka. A US security alert for Arugam Bay in October 2024 was later lifted, and in 2026 police and the Special Task Force ran round-the-clock security in tourist zones. Our Sri Lanka safety guide for 2027 covers this in detail.

Overnight buses run to Arugam Bay but take 7 hours or more and boards can be a problem. A van at US$105 a day has room for boards.

The east coast fits naturally at the end of a hill-country loop: Kandy, tea country, the train from Nanu Oya to Ella, then down to Arugam Bay. On the south coast, Weligama and Ahangama are an easy last stop before the airport.

Plan it

Combining surf with a tour of Sri Lanka

Most people who come to surf also want to see Sigiriya, the tea country and a leopard or two. Two shapes work well:

  1. November to April: Sigiriya, Kandy, tea country and Ella, then a Yala safari and four or five nights surfing in Weligama or Ahangama before the short run to the airport.
  2. May to October: the same cultural loop, then from Ella straight down to Arugam Bay for the east-coast season, with a safari at Kumana or Yala on the way.

Frequently asked questions

When is the surf season in Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka has two surf seasons on opposite coasts. The south and west coasts (Weligama, Ahangama, Hiriketiya, Hikkaduwa) work from about November to April. The east coast around Arugam Bay works from about May to October, with some sources starting the season in April.

Is Sri Lanka good for beginner surfers?

Yes. Weligama Bay on the south coast is the island's classic learner wave, with a sandy bottom and dozens of surf schools. On the east coast, Whisky Point and Elephant Rock near Arugam Bay are the usual beginner spots between May and October.

How much does a surf lesson cost in Sri Lanka?

Published prices in Weligama are around US$20 for a one-hour group lesson and about US$35 for a private lesson including the board. Board hire runs from about US$2 an hour or US$10 a day. Prices vary by school and season, so confirm before you book.

Do I need a wetsuit to surf in Sri Lanka?

No. The water is around 27°C in July to September and close to 30°C in April. Boardshorts or a swimsuit and a rash vest for sun protection are enough.

Is Arugam Bay safe to visit in 2027?

Arugam Bay is open and busy in season. A US security alert for the area in October 2024 was later lifted, and in 2026 police and the Special Task Force ran round-the-clock security in tourist zones. The UK government lists no areas of Sri Lanka it advises against visiting. Check current FCDO advice before you travel.

How long does it take to get from Colombo to Arugam Bay?

About 6.5 to 7.5 hours by private car, covering roughly 314 to 350 km. From Ella it is about 2.5 to 3.5 hours, which is why many travellers break the journey in the hill country.

Where should advanced surfers go in Sri Lanka?

On the east coast, Arugam Bay Main Point, Pottuvil Point and Okanda between May and October. On the south and west coasts, Ram's at Midigama and Benny's at Hikkaduwa between November and April. These are reef waves: bring reef booties and check conditions with locals.

Can I surf and see the rest of Sri Lanka in one trip?

Yes. A common shape is four to six days touring (Sigiriya, Kandy, tea country, a safari) and three to five days surfing. In the south-coast season you finish in Weligama or Ahangama; from May to October you finish in Arugam Bay, about three hours from Ella.
